1 Warp Sateen
Cloth woven with the 5-end warp satin weave. The weaver would put four-fifths of the warp on the face, but this preponderance of warp is increased by weaving more ends than picks per inch, say 160 ends per inch of 60's warp, and 72 picks per inch of 40's weft. Many of these cloths are ornamented with good style jacquard weft figuring, and makes vary considerably from about 150 ends and 76 picks per inch, 50's warp, 30's weft, to 110 ends and 68 picks per inch, 2/60's warp, 28's weft. -

6 Warp Faced Cloths
Cloths that have a preponderance of warp showing on the face. This may be due to the weave only, to the use of a greater number of warp ends per inch than weft picks, or to a combination of both factors. (See Warp Sateen) -

17 Atlas
A name given to gowns and petticoats about 1712 when there were advertised for sale "a purple and gold atlas gown", "a scarlet and gold atlas petticoat edged with silver", and "a blue and gold atlas gown and petticoat". ———————— A warp knit cotton fabric used very extensively for fabric gloves. The principal feature is the striped appearance of the back which shows horizontal stripes from 3/8-in. to 3/4-in. wide. In making this type of fabric, the yarn guides move in one direction for a number of courses and then reverse for a similar number. Two bars are generally used and they move in opposite directions. One series of warp threads arc used for single atlas with a traverse lap; or two series of warps making similar laps, but in opposite directions for double atlas, and this is perfectly ladder-proof, whereas the single atlas is not. The double atlas is largely used in making rayon lingerie. ———————— The German, Dutch, Russian and Danish name for the 5-end satin weave. The term is used to indicate the satin ground weave used in damasks, thus: - The 5-end atlas is the ordinary 5-end satin, and so on to 16-end atlas. A lining cloth - cotton warp and silk weft - woven 5-shaft sateen - giving a weft face of silk in many qualities. Another Atlas fabric with cotton warp and silk weft is made with the 8-shaft sateen weave. -
18 Lambskin
A heavy sateen cloth with weft greatly preponderating over the warp. Strong two-fold warp is used, such as 2/18's or 2/20's cotton with 18's to 24's cotton weft, woven in a 60 reed, and 110 to 130 picks per inch. The cloth is raised on the back with a long fleecy nap. The cloth is woven with a five-shaft double stitch sateen, that is, two adjacent ends lifted together in five-shaft sateen order. -
19 Maude Plaid
A fabric made from a coarse two-fold cotton warp and heavy wool weft with more picks than ends per inch. The weave is a weft sateen which with a sateen back gives a wool surface both back and face. Grey and black wefts are usual and a design is made by interchanging the two. Warp yarns are about 2/10's to 2/20's cotton and 10 or 12 skeins Yorkshire woollen weft, set about 36 ends and 64 picks per inch. -
